History
Brian started in the jewelry and watch repair business largely due to his grandparents
John and Rose Murphy. John started his watch repair business in Fitchburg MA around 1940. Brian would visit after school and started his apprenticeship helping out on the bench, polishing, engraving, restringing, and soldering. In 1975 after graduating from Gardner High School, Brian signed up at the Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking for a one year intensive training course on Watch repair. Graduating in 1976 Brian quickly set up shop in his parent’s house where he repaired watches for as many as 12 different jewelry stores throughout central Massachusetts. By 1980 John Murphy was looking to semi-retire from the business, so Brian moved his watch repair department to Fitchburg and joined forces with his Grandparents renaming the business Murphy Jewelers.
Demand was so great for watch and jewelry repair that more space was needed. Brian moved his watch repair shop back to Gardner naming it Tanguay Jewelers in 1985. Within 3 years, the two businesses grew enough for Brian to sell his interest in the Fitchburg Store to his Brother David. Since then, Tanguay Jewelers has grown from a small repair shop to a full service jewelry store. We offer 1 full time watchmaker on staff, and two full time jewelers. Our shop has increased to 6 times its original size, making it a more efficient shop.
